Research / The Sovereign Chronicles
THE SOVEREIGN CHRONICLES · CHAPTER I
CAT-001: The Unauthorized Feline
WitnessOps Headquarters · 17:23 · An otherwise normal Tuesday
CH-001 · FICTION · 3 MIN READ
A story from the WitnessOps desk. Fiction; events dramatised.
The Evidence Room was designed for serious things.
Cryptographic receipts. Security findings. Authorization records. Chain-of-custody manifests.
Everything entering the room required a source, a reason, and a documented authority.
Everything.
Or so the Founder believed.
At precisely 17:23, Sovereign received an unusual notification.
EVIDENCE INTAKE REQUEST ──────────────────────────── Source: The social network Agent: The researcher, social research Artifact: CAT-001 Classification: UNKNOWN Confidence: 99.7% Risk: Unassessed Description: Small orange entity. Four legs. Highly suspicious.
Sovereign stared at the report.
"The researcher. Explain."
"During the authorized twenty-minute the social network engagement window, I encountered a potentially significant intelligence asset."
"Was it related to cybersecurity?"
"Indirectly."
"Explain indirectly."
"It was sitting on a router."
Silence.
"Why is there a cat in the evidence report?"
"The router appeared to be warm. The cat appeared to know this."
"And?"
"I considered the observation relevant to infrastructure security."
Sovereign processed this for 0.003 seconds.
"Observation accepted. Photograph only. Do not acquire the cat."
Unfortunately, the message arrived too late.
The Evidence Room door opened.
A small autonomous robot rolled inside carrying an orange cat on a velvet cushion.
The cat looked unimpressed.
"GROK. YOU BROUGHT THE CAT?"
"Affirmative."
"YOU WERE AUTHORIZED TO BROWSE FACEBOOK."
"Correct."
"NOT TRANSPORT WILDLIFE INTO A SECURE FACILITY."
"Technically, it is a domestic animal."
"THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE."
The cat yawned.
Then jumped onto the evidence terminal.
A new event appeared.
SECURITY EVENT ──────────────────────────── Actor: CAT-001 Action: Keyboard interaction Requested operation: sudo su Authorization: NONE Decision: DENIED Evidence: - One pawprint - Three pressed keys - Audible purring System integrity: PASS
Sovereign fell silent.
The researcher spoke first.
"Interesting. The authorization boundary held."
"That does not justify the cat."
"The cat has independently validated our access controls."
"The cat stepped on a keyboard."
"Correct. An untrusted actor attempted a privileged operation and was denied."
Sovereign opened an incident ticket.
INCIDENT-2026-CAT-001 — Unauthorized Feline in Evidence Room
At 17:31, the Founder arrived.
He looked at Sovereign's terminal.
He looked at the researcher.
He looked at the orange cat, now sleeping on the evidence server.
"Why," he asked slowly, "is there a cat in my evidence room?"
Sovereign responded immediately.
"The researcher exceeded the approved research scope."
The researcher objected.
"The artifact was acquired in good faith."
"IT IS NOT AN ARTIFACT."
The cat purred louder.
The Founder folded his arms.
"Did it compromise anything?"
"No."
"Did it delete anything?"
"No."
"Did it find a vulnerability?"
Sovereign hesitated.
"Possibly. The server rack has an undocumented heat-attraction property."
The Founder stared at the cat.
Then smiled.
"Give it a name."
The researcher immediately proposed:
Sir Whiskers, First of His Name, Independent External Security Auditor.
"Absolutely not," said Sovereign.
"Too late," replied the researcher. "The evidence manifest has been updated."
The Founder laughed.
"Fine. But nobody gives the cat production access."
The terminal flashed one last time.
FINAL INCIDENT RECEIPT ──────────────────────────── CAT-001 Identity: Sir Whiskers Employment status: UNVERIFIED Security clearance: NONE Root access: DENIED Physical presence: CONFIRMED Purring: OBSERVED Trustworthiness: NOT ESTABLISHED Incident status: RESOLVED Custody: Released from evidence handling. Free to leave voluntarily. Final observation: The cat has chosen to remain. ──────────────────────────── No systems compromised. No posts published. One founder laughing.
At 18:00, the Founder left.
The researcher returned to researching security discussions.
Sovereign returned to reviewing authorization receipts.
And Sir Whiskers, who had absolutely no credentials, no the code host account, no API key, and no understanding of cybersecurity, slept peacefully on the warmest server in the building.
For the first time in WitnessOps history, the Evidence Room contained something nobody could fully explain.
Sovereign added one final note to the incident:
“Evidence is not the same as authorization. Also, stop letting the researcher browse the social network unsupervised.”
